Next-Generation Modular Automation with
Lab Droid

Lab Droid is an autonomous mobile robot (AMR) designed for the laboratory. Combine Lab Droid with PAA's Smart Carts for a truly automated laboratory solution.
THE NEW FLEXIBLE, MODULAR APPROACH TO LABORATORY AUTOMATION
The traditional structure of static automated platforms has changed little over time. They consist of either a liquid handling centric platform or a robot based automated system. Either way, valuable assets are tied up in platforms in awkward positions, idling when they could be used more efficiently.
Smart Cart is a fully mobile life support system for laboratory equipment or laboratory robots. It reimagines what modular automation is, eliminating the need to locate high-value equipment in static automated work cells.
Equipment in static automated work cells. It provides the foundation for a more productive, efficient and dynamic use of instrumentation.
Benefits Smart Cart

Flexible
Deploying Smart Carts in your lab enables flexible automation. Connect robot and instrument carts to run multiple assays daily or hourly. Use offline connect stations for manual instrument use when not in an assay. Share equipment across platforms, labs, or groups to optimize resource usage and collaboration.
Automatable
The Smart Cart, used alone or with the Lab Droid AMR, creates a fully automated island. It enhances resource sharing, workflows, productivity, and equipment efficiency with its Mecanum wheels for precise positioning.
Smart
Smart Cart supports instrumentation needs with advanced features: onboard battery management, self-leveling feet, gas/liquid supply, vibration suppression, and waste containment.
Customisable
The standard Smart Cart is versatile, supporting equipment ranging from small liquid dispensers to large incubators and fully mobile reader/feeder systems. Repurpose underutilized automated platforms and seamlessly connect for enhanced functionality.
Modular
Integrate a single Smart Cart into your existing platform for immediate impact. Experience increased flexibility, instrument pooling, and productivity gains. Build your island of automation and cluster these islands in your lab to empower continuous discovery, with 24/7 access to instrumentation and data integrity.
Features Smart Cart
Self-levelling
Unique functionality means that Smart Carts can cope with unlevel flooring.
Dual ended docking interface
Smart Carts can be connected in two orientations, allowing integration with other automated pieces of equipment, manual access “on system” or avoid downtime using the offline connect station for service maintenance.
Liquid and gas feed
Connect interface makes Smart Carts compatible with almost all instrumentation and allow for continuous running with no manual changing of fluid containers.
Lab Droid ready
Move the smart cart yourself during the day and when you need to increase capacity and get things moving let Lab Droid do the heavy lifting.
Industry 4.0 data monitoring and analysis
A Smart Cart is packed full of sensor monitoring technology. See insights into equipment utilization or environmental impact. Wireless communications & RFID technology means your automated platform knows which Smart Cart is connected into which position, as well as cart orientation.
Connecting interface
Smart Carts are self-aligning, self levelling and self-centralising so no trip hazards cluttering the floor of your labspace. Ditch the dock and grab a Smart Cart!

The central spine of the island of automation is modular, simplifying system expansion. Each vertebra provides two Smart Cart positions. The ends of the island provide capacity for custom solutions.

Multiple instruments can be pooled by installing multiple Smart Carts with the same instrument. Each side of the workcell segment has a monitor that links directly with the mounted instrument.
Connectivity
LMFB (Last Make First Break) connector (x2) - For confirmation of successful docking/undocking operation.
6A 230VAC Power connector (x1) - For charging the carts battery power supply.
General purpose I/O connector (x25) - For relaying of digital signals to and from the docking station i.e. switching on gas supplies etc.
CAT6A 10GBIT Ethernet connector (x2) - one of these connections shall be used for connecting the instrument control PC to the Local Area Network, the other shall be used for transmitting video signal to the docking station monitor.
Pneumatic connector (x3) - Used for feeding process gases to the cart instruments. The gases will be supplied at high pressure from the docking stations and regulated to lower pressures required by the instrument by onboard gas regulators located on the Smart Carts.
Fluid connector (x3) - Can be used for draining waste liquids from the Smart Carts
KX-2 Inverted Robot
Fully Scheduled & Running 24/7
Your scientific operations run seamlessly with fully autonomous capabilities. Lab Droid never stops, whether it's transporting samples or reconfiguring your workcell — even after hours.
Modular
Lab Droid paired with Smart Carts creates a dynamic duo, enabling limitless configurations with a single AMR. Easily transfer samples or equipment between platforms across multiple labs.

Flexible
Lab Droid will move a robot Smart Cart, instrument Smart Cart, an incubator Smart Cart or an entire system.
Independent
With Lab Droid not permanently shackled to a single smart cart, parallel processing of multiple activities is possible. Move an incubator or empty the bins before moving samples from one workcell to another.
